| It's Been a Rough Week March 15, 2008 at 3:33am in life |
Well this week started out rough, and at least is ending on a slightly better note. I finally got my website up and running again after hours of getting pissed off at why it wasn't working. Stupid configuration issue. Anywho, i've been playing Brawl and so far its about what I expected from it. I think it was a little overhyped, but its definitely a good game, and one I would recommend to anyone who has a Wii or wants a good party game. Online multiplayer isn't the greatest...still has a few too many bugs, but I guess I'm spoiled by what XBOX Live brings to the table. It seems that Halo 3 has been the 360 game of choice as of late. Surprised not many of my friends are playing Vegas, but with Vegas 2 coming out on Tuesday, I guess I can't say I'm that surprised. Don't want to get Vegas'd out before the sequel comes out. Rainbow Six Vegas 2 I'm definitely looking forward to. The original was in my opinion one of the best, if not THE best strategic shooter for the 360, and maybe even one of the best beyond that but I'm not going to get into that right now. The seamless co-op will definitely be a thing of beauty to actually be able to play the full storyline with a friend. That was one of my beefs with the original, albeit a minor one, that you couldn't play the true storyline with a partner. Sure you could run the maps, but no cutscenes, none of the true story of the game itself. As I look over at my game shelf, I just realized I still never beat the original Vegas...oh well, one day maybe. I still like the multiplayer aspect of the game though, not fast paced shoot 'em up like in Halo or CoD4, but an actual use strategy and cover to defeat your enemies. I will definitely be giving that a try. |

| Thanksgiving Update November 21, 2007 at 7:04am in life |
Well, the end of a short week is almost over. Just had to work Monday through Wednesday this week as Thursday & Friday I get off for Thanksgiving. First job I've had where I didn't have to request off for Black Friday. Not that I'm really going to go shopping, but you know how it is...just good to be off. I played more of Knights of the Old Republic last night. Got to the part where I kept dying last time I had the game and what do you know, I died again, heh. Oh well I think I can pull it off this time. I hope I can anyway. The game is fun, but as I was talking with LJ yesterday, the combat mechanics are a bit off in the game. Not so much in a horrible, unplayable way, they should just be a lot better. KoTOR II apparently fixed that, but I want to beat this game first. I've decided to go Light Side, at least this time through, maybe I'll end up going through a second time as Dark Side as there is actually a different arc if you do, but I don't know just yet. I'll be bringing my hard drive, and some games home for Thanksgiving so I'll probably get more time to push onward over the 4 day weekend. I started working on the redesign of my website last weekend. So far it's coming along pretty well. Blog portion is nearing completion and the photo section is a work in progress. No time table as to when it will go live yet though. It's a big step from the current version and in my opinion, I think its a good deal better. Like I said though, it's a work in progress as I'm pretty much starting the whole thing from scratch. Keeping a few functions from this version as its simply easier, but overall, its a big overhaul. I ended up failing the FBI exam, and one would actually think I'd be disappointed, but suprisingly enough I'm not. I was actually on the fence about it, whether I wanted to make the committment, etc. so I guess I just feel that it's a sign and it's all for the best. It definitely seemed like a good job, just not sure if I could deal with all the committments and time that would be required. I'm definitely glad I gave it my best shot and tried, but am actually somewhat relieved now. I can try again in a year or so if I change my mind so no harm no foul. I'll be home til at least Saturday, possibly Sunday. Longest stint at home for a while. Not a bad thing at all, will be good to see the family again. Hell, we'll have a full house for the first time since who knows when. Philip, Julianne will also both be home from College. Julianne's not so much a suprise as she's only in Maryland, but Philip's trip from New Hampshire is a long one so, well I guess it's not much of a suprise either, but definitely a harder trip to take. Happy Thanksgiving everyone! |

| Here We Go Again...Jack Thompson at it Again October 24, 2007 at 1:50am in thoughts |
![]() So I was watching an interview on FOX with Jack Thompson regarding Manhunt 2. It was pretty much just as I expected...Jack Thompson putting himself on this giant pedestool claiming the game should be outright banned. He claimed a corrupt ESRB and stores selling these kinds of games to kids as reasons for banning. He calls the fact that Manhunt 2 went from Adults Only to Mature a blatant sign of corruption in the ESRB. Jack goes on to say that because the game can be sold to kids, it should be banned. He says that children should be protected from this. He said kids can go onto Amazon.com and buy the game or go into stores and do the same without a parent. First let's touch the Amazon.com option. To shop at Amazon legally, you need to either be 18, or have a parent/guardian supervising. The conditions of use for Amazon say:
Amazon does sell products for children, but it sells them to adults, who can purchase with a credit card or other permitted payment method. If you are under 18, you may use Amazon.com only with involvement of a parent or guardian. Amazon reserves the right to refuse service, terminate accounts, remove or edit content, or cancel orders in their sole discretion.
So if someone goes onto the site and buys something, they should be 18, and if they are, then what is all the fuss about? If they aren't, Amazon reserves the right to cancel orders should they deem the buyer to be ineligable. Now while Amazon cannot physically monitor who is using their site, what parent in their right mind would give their 12 year old a credit card? And in terms of physical stores like Best Buy and GameStop, well that's the store's policy on whether to sell the game or not. So why the hell, Jack, are you going after the game? Go after the stores if you feel so strongly about limiting sales to minors. Jack compares this protection of children to the protection from porn. Okay, adult sites have age checkers to prevent those underage from registerring for their sites. But what about the countless sites that offer free previews or have pictures on their front page. Any unsupervised kid on a computer without some sort of filter could google "sex" and bring up hundreds of thousands of different sites. So Jack, are you going to push to ban all computers? While you're at it, why not ban the entire internet? It still comes down to one question. Where the hell are the parents? I'm not a parent, but isn't it THEIR responsibility to monitor what their children do, play, watch, see, etc? My parents did that to me, and at the time, I HATED it. Looking back at it now, I'm glad they were the way they were. I sure as hell will not let my future kids play certain games until I feel they are old enough. At the end of the day, this is the big thing. The parents should be responsible for their kids. But parents will try to pass off that responsibility to someone else instead of taking responsibility for their kids. I mean the games all have ratings clearly marked on them. E for everyone, T for teen, M for mature. I don't know enough about the inner workings about the ESRB to be able to dispute or agree with Jack's claims of corruption, but looking at the games I own and their ratings; the ratings are pretty doggone accurate. The ratings even give a brief reasoning for the rating. There are also plenty of websites with resources for parents about these video games. The parents need to be involved with what their children play. Banning a game is only going to help parents shrug off their responsibilities. I will say that I have no problem requiring stores to check for ID when buying M-rated games like they do with tobacco and alcohol. The games are not being banned, and you're still having a process to help protect the children. As far as I'm concerned, this would be a viable option to protect the children and the first amendment that Jack seems to be ignoring or at best, twisting it to fit his purposes. Several states have tried this, but seem to have the law struck down by the court systems. Jack, why don't you spend your time lobbying for this instead of trying to ban games. The First Amendment allows for freedom of speech, and freedom of expression. Video games definitely fall under this category. While I do agree with Jack in that children need to be protected, banning video games, or a video game is not the way to do it. Jack seems to have a record of twisting the amendment around to help him attempt to win his arguments. While that tactic may not be unique to him, the First Amendment allows for game makers to make whatever kind of game they choose. In the end, Jack Thompson was just being Jack Thompson. It's a shame because he seems to have a lot charisma about his "cause". If only he would put it towards a more, how shall we say it, reasonable endeavour.
