| For any wondering, I removed the user section of the site, I decided that maintaining user accounts was a little overkill. Your comments are still there, and you can still comment, the creation of a profile just has been removed, if you have any thoughts, let me know. |

| The Phoenix Has Landed May 26, 2008 7:26pm in Science |
NASA's scientists can finally rest easy as the Mars Phoenix Lander has landed successfully on Mars. Even in today's world, landing something on a distant planet isn't easy, and statistically, 55% of Mars missions have ended in failure. Now this is not to overshadow the successes both NASA and other space agencies have had over the years, with the most notable mission probably being the Viking missions and the current Spirit and Opportunity Rovers. The Phoenix Lander is the first to land near Mars polar icecaps and its mission is to drill into the surface to look for signs of life, both past and present. Hopefully the initial success will carry over to a full successful mission. |

| Busy Life I Have May 25, 2008 12:49am in life |
It's been a busy week for me, busy with work and doing internationalization support. It's challenging, although a little annoying that every solution continues to breed new problems, although things are looking much better now, so hopefully that will maybe speed things up a little come next week. I had a barbeque tonight, burgers came out well, but I got a lot left over...cheeseburgers all week! I think one of my projects for tomorrow and Monday is going to be a SLIGHT overhaul of my server. I think I'm going to switch over to Ubuntu 8.04 64 bit. I've had good experiences with 64 bit Linux, unfortunately there were a few applications that gave me issues under 64 bit, most notably, flash. Well since its my server, that is a non-issue as I don't need flash to work as I'm not using it to watch the latest YouTube videos, I'm simply just using it to host files, and serve as a web and database server amongst other things. Such is the beauty of Linux, all my data will be safe as I just need to go over the system drive. Yes Windows can do it too, but I always found it to be simpler under Linux. So far I like where my new project is going, not gonna say much more than that, but when its closer to being finished, I think it will be pretty nice. Happy Day of the Jedi! |

| BluRay Players May 21, 2008 5:53pm in tech |
So I was in Walmart the other day picking up a few things, and I happen to pass by the electronics department. I glance over and see a Blu-Ray DVD player priced at $900. I didn't think anything of it until I got home. I'm wondering why Blu-Ray players are still so expensive even now that Blu-Ray defeated HD DVD in the high definition DVD war. What makes this even more curious is the price of Sony's PlayStation 3. You can go out to the store now and get a 40GB PlayStation 3 for $399.99. The PS3 is Sony's next generation game system but it also acts as a Blu-Ray DVD player, and a good one at that. It plays Blu-Ray and does a pretty good job upscaling regular DVDs as well. I'm just curious what makes standalone Blu-Ray players cost more than the PS3. The PS3 is an advanced game console with more hardware, and more expensive hardware than a simple Blu-Ray player would need. And unlike some players, the PS3 can use firmware updates to allow the everchanging Blu-Ray spec to be fully compatible and playable on the PS3, something that is definitely something to think about with the semi-regular updates to Blu-Ray. So far I can really only think of one reason for this significant price difference: Sony's need to keep the price of their game console more in line with that of the XBOX 360 and the Wii. And $900 would probably alienate a chunk of their PlayStation base. So they bring the price of the PS3 down but keep the other Blu-Ray players up in price to help their bottom line. So in other words, if you want to get a Blu-Ray player, even if you're not a gamer, the PS3 might be the better option unless of course you have the money to spend or you can wait for the prices to inevitably go down (whenever that may be). |

| Zero Punctuation Takes on GTA IV May 14, 2008 1:36pm in gaming |
As predicted, Zero Punctuation reviewed GTA IV. The game that I've been hooked on for 2 weeks actually seemed to survive with only some minor scathes compared to other games that he tore to bits. |
