User Accounts

For any wondering, I removed the user section of the site, I decided that maintaining user accounts was a little overkill. Your comments are still there, and you can still comment, the creation of a profile just has been removed, if you have any thoughts, let me know.

Halo 3 is Coming
September 22, 2007 11:06pm in gaming

In honor of the release of Halo 3 Tuesday I figured I'd give some of my thoughts on the game. I liked both Halo and Halo 2. I still play the multiplayer on Halo 2 and for the most part kick butt. While a lot of people didn't like the campaign on Halo 2, but I thought it was pretty good with a nice storyline. The only thing that annoyed me was the cliffhanger of an ending, but hey, makes my acquisition of Halo 3 all that more exciting to find out how it ends. I played the beta quite a bit and was impressed with it and knowing the graphics only improved...makes it that much more impressive. All I can say is Tuesday night...Halo 3 baby. I'm sure the multiplayer will be fun and am psyched about seeing the end of the storyline.

Stupidly Optimistic
September 21, 2007 1:41pm in thoughts
Am I being stupidly optimistic?

So while I was playing poker last night we turned on the Phillies game only to see them losing 6-2 to the Nationals...c'mon the Nationals suck this year. I was pissed so I turned it off. An hour or so later, we turn it back on and what do you know, game's tied 6-6 apparently thanks to a monster home run by Jayson Werth (I saw the replay, it was a great shot, and in RFK stadium, it's hard to hit home runs). We continued to play poker and in the 8th inning I think it was Carlos Ruiz managed to get to 2nd and J-Roll was at the plate and my cousin Tim says "He's gonna hit the ball past the first baseman" Several pitches later, Jimmy hits the ball down the first baseline and gets a single scoring Ruiz putting the Phils on top 7-6. They eventually won the game and I ended up winning $15 in Poker after splitting the pot with Bailey.

Which brings me to my main thought. Am I being stupidly optimistic thinking that the Phillies really have a chance to get to the playoffs? They're 1.5 games back from the Mets in the NL East and 2.5 games behind the Padres in the NL Wildcard race. But why am I so optimistic this year, the Phillies have been like this the past two years only to end up 1-2 games back from the wildcard when all is said and done. They do this every year and every year I get all my hopes up. Oh well, maybe this year is the year...GO PHILLIES!

My Thoughts on Linux
September 21, 2007 12:50am in tech

As many of those who know me have learned, I am an advocate of open source and Linux. My server runs Ubuntu and my desktop triple boots with Windows XP, Ubuntu, and Slackware. I like what Linux offers, the ability for customization as well as some pretty nice apps to do almost everything I need. I've been a pretty steady Linux user for over a year now and I really wish I could just dump Windows and just run a pure Linux box. Unfortunately, the same thing that could possibly keep many from making the switch entirely is keeping me on Windows from time to time.

One of the biggest drawbacks to Linux for a lot of people my age is gaming. I mean there's Cedega and WINE, but c'mon, let's face it, next to running games natively on Windows, neither Cedega or WINE can compare. This is particularly true on the more recent, graphic intensive games. I mean I've moved towards console gaming a lot more lately so this wouldn't be so big of a deal, but there are a handful of games where I still need my computer particularly World of Warcraft, Battlefield 2142, and my collection of RTS games.

Hardware support has improved tremendously lately, I know on my Desktop, everything just works. My multimedia keyboad keys even work properly without any special configuration. The only driver installation I have to do are the nvidia drivers and dual screen setup. Past that I can simply install and go. This I'm sure is a little different on laptops, but I have a Macbook Pro and I'm perfectly content using OS X and see very little reason to install Linux on it. My experience might not match every case, but it seems that slowly but surely, hardware support seems to be growing.

Software is growing in leaps and bounds. So far, with the exception of games, I have found very few Windows apps that I can't find an open source alternative for. My mac formatted iPod even works fine on Linux (a feat I don't even think is possible under Windows)

Linux in my opinion is a great alternative to Microsoft Windows, and an even better alternative to the bloated mess of an operating system Microsoft calls Windows Vista. I just really wish more companies would port their games to Linux...it would make my life so much simpler and I could say goodbye to Windows forever...I'd hope.

Something Should Go Here
September 20, 2007 1:36pm in life
It actually surprises me that the week is just about over. It almost seems like it just started. But you definitely won't see me complain. Friday's are always good, and Thursdays, well that just means its one more day til Friday. These next couple of days are gonna be busy. Tonight is poker, tomorrow night is dinner with the family, and Sunday I have the distinct pleasure of flying to Boston on a business trip. I'm going up to Massachusetts Sunday-Tuesday to install a new machine for a client. I guess it will be good to get a few days away, but part of me still just wants to sleep in my own bed.
